What is a Pedorthist and how do I become one?

A Licensed Pedorthist (LPed) is a Pedorthist who is licensed as required by the Oklahoma Pedorthic Licensure Act. An LPed specializes in the design, fit and modification of foot appliances and footwear.

The scope of training includes the study of foot anatomy and pathology, lower extremity biomechanics, shoe construction and modification, design and fabrication of foot orthosis, footwear fitting, and patient/practice management. In Oklahoma anyone dispensing diabetic footwear or custom arch supports must be a physician, physical therapist or an LPed. The Oklahoma Medical Board governs LPeds in Oklahoma.

1. Successfully complete an American Board for Certification in Orthotics,
Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC) recognized training program.

2. Pass the ABC examination.

3. Apply for LPed license with the Oklahoma Medical Board.

What are the benefits of being an LPed?

  1. Oklahoma State law requires anyone practicing Pedorthics to be licensed.
  2. Demonstrate competency in the manufacture, design and fit of foot appliances and footwear.
  3. The Pedorthic field is growing rapidly due to the aging population.
  4. Licensing protects consumers from fraudulent and unskilled "salesmen" peddling orthopedic supplies.

Fact: 80% of the population needs pedorthic services.
